Join Oxford Bach Choir

Would you like the thrill of singing with a mixed voice choir that has a great choral tradition going back over 100 years?

If you are thinking of joining a choir in Oxford, then singing with the Oxford Bach Choir is a wonderfully rewarding experience.  As a singing member you will have the chance to rehearse and perform with one of the most respected amateur choirs in the UK.

You will meet like-minded people who share your interest in music and have an opportunity to experience singing with professional conductors, orchestras and soloists.

We are always keen to find new members in all voice parts who:
  • Have previous choral experience
  • Are confident and competent singers
  • Have reasonable sight reading
  • Will be able to commit to three main concerts each season
  • Will be able to attend rehearsals which take place in Oxford mainly in Oxford terms

More information...

For more information about joining Oxford Bach Choir please contact Catrin Roberts, our membership secretary, by email:

The Choir performs at least four concerts a year. The season’s programme is varied and can include works by Bach, other well-known works from the traditional choral repertoire, more unusual and newer works and sometimes challenging commissions. Concerts are usually held in the splendour of Christopher Wren’s Sheldonian Theatre in central Oxford, but also from time to time in Oxford Town Hall or in the Church of St John the Evangelist, Iffley Road.

Additional events

Oxford Bach Choir is often asked to sing at functions such as weddings and memorial services. Smaller groups from within the Choir are formed for this purpose. Foreign trips are arranged from time to time, and recently members went to Belgium, Portugal and Göttingen in Germany.

Occasionally we are invited to join with other choirs. We shall be singing with Gloucester Choral Society next May in two concerts to mark Parry’s centenary. Recently we have sung with the Choir of St George’s Chapel, Windsor Castle and Merton College Choir in Oxford.

Open rehearsals and auditions

Our next open rehearsals will be on Wednesday 6th December and Monday 11th December. Prospective members wishing to join in Hilary Term 2018 are warmly invited to attend either or both rehearsals, which will be taken by Libby Burgess as part of the choir’s preparation for the Carols for All concert on December 16th. Please email the membership secretary for further details. Auditions will be arranged in the new year. Auditions usually consist of simple scales and arpeggios to test voice range and quality, aural assessments for pitch and rhythm, singing a short piece of your own choice, and a little sight reading.

Rehearsal information

Rehearsals take place on Monday nights 7.30 pm – 9.30 pm during full term at the Wesley Memorial church, New Inn Hall Street, Oxford OX1 2DH. In addition, there is one Saturday rehearsal each term. Members should be able to commit to all concerts and all rehearsals at the time of joining, although there is flexibility for rehearsals missed for unforeseen reasons.

Concert information

There are currently three main concerts each season, which will take place on either a Saturday or Sunday of 7th or 8th week. There is also a Christmas Carols for All concert in which we encourage all members to take part. The Choir will occasionally perform preview concerts in the week prior to the main concerts, working with a local school as part of our outreach programme.
